New Releases: July 29, 2008
Alice Cooper – Along Came a Spider CD (Steamhammer)
Like School’s Out and From the Inside, Alice Cooper’s Along Came a Spider is a concept album. This time the central character is a spider-obsessed serial killer who has been beaten down by society and now lives by the arachnid code of “”You trap, you kill, you eat.” Slash and Kiss’ Eric Singer guest but longtime fans will be most excited to hear that the evil child “Steven” from Cooper’s 1975 album Welcome To My Nightmare is back and still breaking all his toys.
Scars on Broadway (System of a Down) – Scars on Broadway CD (Interscope)
Collaboration between guitarist/frontman Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan, both of the on-hiatus System Of A Down. The music is more melodic than SOAD, showing the discernable influences of Neil Young and David Bowie. Free lithograph with purchase.
Soulfly - Conquer CD (Roadrunner)
With all the buzz surrounding Max and Igor’s reunion in the Cavalera Conspiracy project, many weren’t even anticipating a new Soulfly release. Things change. This is Soulfly’s most accomplished work to date, eschewing the nu-metal tendencies of yesterday in favor of Roots-era tribal influences peppered throughout an album of true, in-your-face metal… Cavalera-style!
Neil Halstead (Mojave 3) – Oh! Mighty Engine CD (Brushfire)
“One night while in the studio with Neil Halstead a friend questioned him as to what kind of music he played. Neil’s extremely thick beard turned into a smile as he said ‘Nylon Rock’ before laughing and turning back to his beer. I don’t think that description offered any clarity to the asker, but to me it seemed perfect: a self-effacing term to help him deal with the fact that he, a former shoegazer (ex-Slowdive), was making a solo record and his main weapon was simply a nylon string guitar and a couple of shakers.” — Emmett Malloy/Brushfire Records
The Enemy UK – We’ll Live and Die in These Towns CD (WB)
Youthful balls-out British rock & roll — heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones, The Jam and Oasis. Already certified UK Platinum, this domestic version includes two new bonus tracks, including a cover of David Bowie’s “Five Years.”
